hike up to the RCAF crash site

Posted in scenic vistas on October 1, 2008 by Kent

It took almost a year for us to do it, but on Sept 24th Kim & I finally had the chance to hike up to an old B25 bomber crash near Rossland. Kim had told me the story of a crash that had occurred in 1947 but had rarely been visited since it’s discovery in 1952. We were going to attempt it last fall but when we got to the stopping point off the highway it was snowing and we were losing light fast, so we wisely opted out. ……fast forward to a few weeks ago when I discovered GPS coordinates to the site on geocaching.com

So after coordinating days off, Kim & I headed on our hike to the crash. It was a cool fall day that ended up getting sunny and basicly perfect. Thankfully we also got coordinates for the trailhead up to the site, so although it was a 2 km hike straight up the hill, at least we hiked on a path. Prior to that we only had crash site coordinates, so we would have been bushwhacking the whole way up.

The crash site was amazing with the main wreckage really close together. We also found both wings farther up the hill (one was 100m away while the second was 200m away). We spend an hour exploring the site and taking pictures before heading back down to the truck.

Thanks to my brother, Kim, for going on the hike with me and for the pictures… mucho gracious.

Here are two links that tell the story on the crash… one & two
